Olivenhain:

The name is of German origin, meaning "olive grove," and is pronounced Oh-Lee-Ven-Hine. The gradual decline of farming activity during the 1950's combined with the importation of water to Southern California slowly transformed the Olivenhain area into its present residential status.–

Encinitas:

This place called Encinitas sits on the coastline of the Pacific Ocean and is embraced by the atiquitos Lagoon to the north and the San Elijo Lagoon to the south. The City of Encinitas was founded over 100 years ago and is now made up of five communities that take pride in their own distinct personalities. "Historic Encinitas" fills the highway 101 Corridor that parallels the beautiful beaches and ocean. "New Encinitas" centers on El Camino Real ("The Kings Highway" founded by the early missionaries from Spain). "Cardiff-by-the-Sea" is made up of quaint homes dotting the hillsides overlooking the sea. "Leucadia" is famous for its giant eucalyptus trees that line the main thoroughfare on the Coast Highway. "Olivenhain" (which means "olive grove" in German) boasts plenty of open horse country, pastures, and a rural way of life. For more info cal

Leucadia:

Leucadia is part of the Encinitas Zip Code but boast a different mind set combining both a coastal community as well as a rural feel! Homes differ from some funky beach cottages to new upscale homes most being custom designs versus large planned communities. The population varies from surfers to many professionals preferring the rural feeling of Olivenhain. The beaches are world renown for the caliber of the “surf” and Beacons Beach and the Leucadian sunsets are famous!.

Schools in this area

is very informed about the local schools in the Encinitas, Leucadia and Olivehain areas. Although Proposition O was passed in 1996, Encinitas Union School District, with its nine elementary schools, is still working on improvements. Funds from the state are also helping refurbish old classrooms and bring school facilities into the new century.“What the district decided to do, rather than do all of them at the same time, was to do two schools at a time over the course of eight years,” said Dan Grider, assistant superintendent of administrative services. “All the projects are approaching near completion.” All schools were modernized, with the addition of technological infrastructure needed for students to better access the Internet. Now, Grider said, they are in “phase two.”

Although Proposition O was passed in 1996, Encinitas Union School District, with its nine elementary schools, is still working on improvements. Funds from the state are also helping refurbish old classrooms and bring school facilities into the new century. “What the district decided to do, rather than do all of them at the same time, was to do two schools at a time over the course of eight years,” said Dan Grider, assistant superintendent of administrative services. “All the projects are approaching near completion.” All schools were modernized, with the addition of technological infrastructure needed for students to better access the Internet. Now, Grider said, they are in “phase two”.

In addition, many of the schools in the district have already received much-needed facelifts to their entrance and main office areas, new media centers or multipurpose rooms and new air conditioning systems. But more improvements are planned as the district brings the older schools up to speed with the newer ones. “The equity issue has had us focus on our older schools, even after the modernization and renovations,” Grider said. Ocean Knoll, Paul Ecke Central and Capri are located on the west side of town in “old” Encinitas. The schools range in age, with Paul Ecke Central being district’s oldest at 65 years old. The second oldest school, Ocean Knoll, is 50 and suffered damage in a fire last year. Renovations there were completed this past summer. “Fortunately we hadn’t started the modernization work there yet,” Grider said. “But it has taken an entire year to rebuild. Four classrooms were totaled and four sustained smoke damage. They are now the finest classrooms in the district.” Improvements to nearby Capri, nearly 36 years old, included split-site classrooms for the school’s popular dual-language immersion program, which is designed to teach English and Spanish to the students. As homes in the Encinitas Ranch are built, Capri Elementary has also been identified to absorb anticipated growth, Grider said. Three schools on the north side of town, in La Costa, have also been identified to absorb anticipated growth, he said, as the homes in the developments off Rancho Santa Fe Road are built. Several new classrooms are going in at El Camino Creek, he said, and new ones are anticipated for Mission Estancia, La Costa Heights and Olivehain Pioneer. “At some point there may be mitigation [by developers] for growth,” Grider added. But for now, he said, the district is ready.
